What is hypnosis - will I be unconscious?

Hypnosis is an extremely pleasant, enjoyable and relaxed state, and one in which you are completely in control and totally aware of your surroundings and what is said to you. It is a state somewhere in between wakefulness and sleep; one you enter in fact each night as you go to sleep and each morning as you come to. In this hypnotic, dream-like state, you are much more susceptible to positive suggestion. You will not be asleep or unconscious.

Will I lose control in any way?

Not at all. I cannot make you say or do anything you do not want to. You remain in complete control at all times.

How is Curative Hypnotherapy different to standard hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis is, quite simply, a tool and as such, can be used for many different purposes. Standard hypnotherapy uses hypnosis to suppress, alter or manage symptoms but often leaves the Cause of the problem very much untouched. Since the underlying Cause hasn't been addressed or rectified in any way, there is a very real risk that symptoms could resurface at a later stage or alternatively, some substitute problem could emerge.

Curative Hypnotherapy takes a different approach and is designed to dig up the roots of the problem once and for all - after all, why prune a tree when it may well grow back stronger? We therefore use hypnosis to uncover and correct the root cause of your condition / disorder, thereby enabling a permanent and complete cure to be effected.

Do I need to be referred by my GP?

No, not at all. Since I am a private practitioner, no referral is required.

Will I be made to face my fears?

If you have previously undergone one of the mainstream therapies or treatments, you may well have been subject to various exposure or desensitisation techniques. Such methods gradually but increasingly expose the patient to the object of their fear (the stimulus) with the purpose of, over time, desensitizing the patient to that stimulus. However, whereas such techniques may gain fairly quick results, they can be extremely distressing and stressful for the patient and only look to help a person to manage their symptom. The Cause, meanwhile, is left very much untouched and the problem still there. Since with Curative Hypnotherapy, the aim is not to manage or suppress the symptom in any way but to enable you to be entirely free of it, such techniques are of no use nor benefit and therefore have no place in treatment.

Will I have to re-live any traumatic or uncomfortable events from my past?

Not at all. Whereas therapists of other modalities may deem it beneficial and even necessary to make their patient re-live traumatic events or situations from their past, working through thought patterns and associated emotions and behaviours, this plays no part in Curative Hypnotherapy. Not only is this counter-productive to the treatment but entirely unnecessary.

Can I bring someone along with me to my Initial Consultation?

It is quite common for patients to be extremely nervous on their initial session and want to bring someone along for support.* This is perfectly understandable and we have no objection to this whatsoever. However, it will only be possible for your companion to stay with you during the first half of the session (when discussing your issue or condition). In the second part, you will be given the opportunity to experience for yourself the pleasant and enjoyable state of hypnosis and it is important that this is done on a one-to-one basis. Should this cause you any concern for whatever reason, however, please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss.

*Should you wish to bring someone along to this first session, please do let me know beforehand, so that we can make the necessary arrangements.

How many sessions will my treatment take?

Each individual is unique and will progress through treatment at their own rate. It therefore follows that the pace and speed of treatment can only be led by you, the patient. Since the treatment is designed to enable you to be entirely free of your issue or condition rather than to merely suppress the symptom(s), a course of treatment sessions will be required. Typically, it should take around 8-10 sessions to identify and correct the Root Cause of your symptom and dispose of the need for your symptom; not just completely but permanently.

How regular should my treatment sessions be?

Treatment sessions are generally scheduled weekly. However, fortnightly is quite common and some even prefer monthly appointments.
